Exciting Redesign Revealed for Chelsea Waterside Playground

Exciting Redesign Revealed for Chelsea Waterside Playground

A $2 million redesign with new equipment, structures, water features, and more will transform the beloved playground in Hudson River Park.

Parents who like to take their kids to slip and slide at the Chelsea Waterside Playground, located right inside Hudson River Park, will be excited to know that a $2 million revamp is in the works. The West 23rd Street and 11th Avenue location will be refitted with new equipment, water features, and climbing structures.

The new plan for upgrades was recently completed and signed off by the Hudson River Park Trust at Community Board 4's Waterfront, Parks & Environment Manhattan meeting on Nov. 10. The new construction is set to begin in the fall of 2017, with the big reveal of the newly-designed play space in spring of 2018.

Currently, parents and kids are enjoying the award-winning equipment designed by Kompan, a Danish company known for its unique play environments. But this gem of a park will shine even brighter after this redesign is complete.

Kids of all ages love to climb and explore, so there will be plenty of that to be had at the redesigned Chelsea Waterside Playground. The new renovation will reveal a giant pipefish-shaped climbing structure in the center of the playground among other new creations for kids to enjoy. There will also be the addition of a playhouse as well as a water maze for older children.

The beloved and safe water and sand features of the park, along with the relaxing shaded seating areas will remain as part of the new design. All of the existing trees and landscaping will be preserved as well.

With plans to unveil the playground in 2018, this unique park will give kids one more reason to ask: Is it spring yet?
