These Are the Best Online Cooking Classes for Kids

These Are the Best Online Cooking Classes for Kids

These 10 affordable and fun virtual kids cooking classes will teach your little ones new culinary skills as well as math, organization, history, and more.

This fall, with remote learning in place and many after-school programs and youth sports canceled, kids will have plenty of time for at-home activities and learning new skills. Additionally, many parents are in search of unconventional ways to teach kids typical school subjects like math and history. These 10 virtual kids cooking classes will help kids learn their own way around the kitchen while simultaneously teaching them math, measurements, temperature, organization, health, and history in fun and exciting ways.    Taking one (or more!) of these virtual cooking classes is a great opportunity to trigger a new passion, or at the very least, keep them off Fortnite for a few hours.

Outschool

Among what seems to be literally thousands of unique classes taught by independent teachers (Unicorn Camp, anyone?), Outschool’s marketplace also offers children's cooking classes that are under $20. Kids can learn how to make Japanese souffle pancakes, black bean salsa, Thai food or a “Disney Princess themed recipe.” There’s also a regular cooking club for budding chefs and a Harry Potter Cooking Challenge for Butterbeer Ice Cream Pie.

Raddish: A Cooking Club for Kids

This all-ages culinary club is now offering free online cooking classes. Become a member to receive a themed kit ($24 per month). For example, May was "Made in Morocco," and included recipes for kefta rolls, chicken tagine, and orange blossom tea cakes. Then log on to Facebook—where Founder Samantha Barnes has archived these cooking lessons—to follow along online.

Christina Tosi’s Baking Club

You may have heard of brilliant baker Christina Tosi—her Milk Bar in Brooklyn is home to the unforgettable cereal-milk-flavored ice cream. Since the quarantine began, she’s been hosting Bake Clubs on IG Live in which she makes her signature decadent desserts while kids watch and cook along with the live video. She’s always full of enthusiasm and her sweet creations are creative yet not overly complicated.

Kate Sonders Solomon

Kate Sonders, an accomplished home cook and former cheesemaking apprentice, turned her in-person Westchester cooking classes virtual at the beginning of the quarantine. Now she teaches weekly all-ages kids cooking classes on Wednesdays at 4pm EST. Her classes include recipes from around the world, comfort food, healthy recipes, and sweets. As her loyal following continues to increase, she plans to add more classes to the schedule

Food Literacy Center

This nonprofit inspires children to eat vegetables and is known for teaching low-income families about cooking, nutrition, and gardening. Now they offer a free online curriculum with Facebook Live lessons for fun snacks and meals like ranch popcorn, noodle soup, and veggie tostadas. There are pointers for everything from knife skills to what kids can do with dried beans.

Brooklyn’s Dynamite Shop

This local culinary center offers online kids cooking classes (ages 7-15) to teach them how to make family-friendly dinners like cheesy baked pasta with garlicky sautéed greens and French onion soup with massaged kale salad. Classes ($25-30), which take place on a 1.5 hour Zoom call, are weekly but also available on a drop-in basis. Kids (or adults) can also celebrate birthdays with their online cooking party classes.

Real Food 4 Kids

Founded in 2004, this organization offers free, weekly, kid-friendly cooking projects, such as scratch-made tortillas, granola, and a chocolate chip cookie pie, complete with video tutorials and advice on how to best involve your little ones in the culinary process. Sign up for free on the Real Food 4 Kids website and find more free kids cooking content on Real Food 4 Kids' YouTube page.

Home Cooking New York

This cooking school recently went online for kids (ages 10 and up) who can take classes along with their parents or alone. Meals and menus include taco party, handmade dumplings, gnocchi and risotto, and a Northern Italian dinner. The weekly Supper Club classes guide kids through the process of cooking dinner (tailored to their own family). The Cookbook Club introduces kids to a new cookbook every month, and all classes cover fundamentals like knife safety and ingredient exploration.

CocuSocial

CocuSocial is offering a variety if in-person and online cooking classes for both kids and adults, including an upcoming Halloween cookie decorating class. You can choose from a variety of fun (and delicious) options like handmade ravioli, New York style bagels, macarons, hand-rolled sushi, and soft homemade pretzels for only $19 a class! The Master Series of classes are taught by world-renowned chefs.
