Gluten-Free Bakeries on Long Island

Gluten-Free Bakeries on Long Island

Finding gluten-free desserts can be a challenge, whether you're managing Celiac disease, or maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We've rounded up bakeries on Long Island serving up gluten-free treats, so you can still enjoy sweets without sacrificing your gluten-free diet.

Bare Naked Bakery and Cafe

2572 Merrick Road, Bellmore
516-809-7370

Bridget Brennan, the brains and the owner of Bare Naked, had a very personal reason for opening up her thriving business. Her sister was put on a wheat-free diet back in 2006, and Brennan followed suit. She quickly realized that some of her chronic ailments quickly disappeared. In 2010, Brennan then opened Long Island’s first gluten-free bakery. She not only serves muffins and pastries, but the bakery also offers sandwiches and pizzas, all made gluten-free and in the bakery. One of their hot commodities is the ice cream bar, where they serve dairy free, egg free and vegan ice cream.

Jac’s Bakeshop & Bistro

600 S. Oyster Bay Road, Hicksville
516-931-8600

Jaclyn Messina, the owner of Jac’s Bakeshop, was diagnosed with Celiac disease about five years ago while she was studying at the Culinary Institute of America. However, she didn’t let the diagnosis hold her back from becoming what she set out to be. She began experimenting with non-wheat flours and eventually came up with a plan to open up her own cafe. That’s how Jac’s Bakeshop came into fruition and she strives to serve the gluten-free community. The cafe offers gluten-free pies, cookies, pastries, and bread. Jac's now takes online orders.

Ms. Michelle’s Urban Gourmet

572 Middle Road, Bayport
631-472-2524

The “urban” in Ms. Michelle’s Urban Gourmet was actually the name of the family that built the cottage about 150 years ago. Michelle Gillette, the owner of the bakeshop, did her research before she bought the yellow cottage. Although Gillette doesn’t suffer from any digestive issues, she knew she wanted to serve the gluten-free community. Her menu boasts of scones, muffins, and fresh fruit tarts. All of her breads are all gluten free as well.

Wild Flours Bake Shop

11 New St. Huntington
631-923-1090

Carolyn Arcario and May Mucci revamped the idea of a bakery when they set out to open not only a gluten-free, but sugar-free, and dairy-free bakery. Arcario said that it was a little hard when the ingredients to make basic bakery items were nixed, but she accepted the challenge. As an experienced home baker, she started working with other flours to combat her inability to digest gluten. She uses different rice and flours to make her cookies, cakes, and brownies. She relies on natural sugar from the grains, and her customers can’t even tell the difference!

Sweet Karma Desserts

136 Manetto Hill Road, Plainview
516-794-4478

Brian Fishman, the owner of Sweet Karma, sets aside a special area that is dedicated solely to gluten-free baking. He offers gourmet desserts, such as cakes, cupcakes, cheesecake, and cookies that are gluten-free.
