Description: This annual fall event features authentic German foods, music, crafts, and more. Afterward, enjoy the fall foliage around Hessian Lake and the rest of the park. The festival runs each weekend through October.
Venue Description: Located on more than 5,000 acres on the west side of the Hudson River, Bear Mountain State Park sits among Rockland County's mountain peaks. Since opening in 1913, its mission has been to preserve land and provide the public with opportunities for outdoor recreation.
The park features a large playing field, shaded picnic groves, rowboat docks on Hessian Lake, nature trails including segments of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, museum, zoo, and a swimming pool. Common activities open to visitors are hiking, biking, boating, cross-country skiing, cross-country running, sledding, and ice skating at an outdoor rink open late October through mid-March. A popular attraction is the Perkins Memorial Tower atop Bear Mountain where visitors can take a scenic drive up Perkins Memorial Drive to the tower to catch a sprawling view of the park as well as the nearby Hudson Highlands and Harriman State Park.
Within the park are the Trailside Museums and Zoo, a hotel called Bear Mountain Inn, and a merry-go-round with hand-painted scenes of the park and 42 hand-carved seats depicting native animals. The merry-go-round is available for birthday parties. The park also offers a variety of educational day programs for children.
Bear Mountain State Park is open year round from 8am-Sunset. Summer pool hours are Monday-Friday 10am-5:30pm, weekends and holidays 11am-6:30pm. The Trailside museums and zoo are open Saturday-Sunday 10am-4:30pm. Parking is available. Dogs are allowed in the park ,but must be muzzled and on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
